Important Information about Marriage Certificates in Mexico

When you were legally married in Cancun, or other city in Quintana Roo, Mexico, the Civil Registry issued three original “legal size” marriage certificates, signed by the couple and their witnesses:

  • One is filed at the state office in Chetumal

  • One is kept at the local municipality

  • One is given to the couple for their personal records

Certified Copies

A certified copy is different from the original document.

  • It is issued in letter size format

  • It does not include signatures of the couple or witnesses

  • It includes:

    • An official Mexican raised seal

    • A printed state seal

    • An official municipal stamp

Certified copies are the standard documents used for most legal and administrative purposes.

How to Get Your Certified Copy

  • To begin the process, please provide a clear photo, scan, or readable copy of your original marriage certificate.

  • If you do not have a copy or photo, don't worry. I can still locate your records if you provide the following information:

  • Full names of both spouses.

  • The City/Municipality where the wedding took place.

  • The Time and Date of the ceremony.

  • If available: The Court Office number, Book number, and Record number.

Note on Vital Records Search: If you do not have your Book and Record numbers, a Vital Records Search is required to locate your file within the government archives. This search has an additional cost of $60 USD.

Processing Time

The process typically takes 5 to 10 business days, depending on the municipality and current processing times.

NOTE: It will take a longer time if we need to request a vital records search.
